Events

A&P Shows and Field days take place throughout the year all over the country and are a great opportunity to showcase our breed. All our breeders are encouraged to present their animals when they can.

The year culminates in the annual South Island Championships in Christchurch during the New Zealand Agricultural Show in November. Judging takes place on the first day of the show and we welcome the public to come and take a good look at our beautiful animals for the remainder of the show.

South Island Boer Goat Championships

The 2023 South Island Boer Goat Championships took place again during the NZ Agricultural Show held in Christchurch. We were able to secure Peter Mitchell, who is a level 3 Senior Judge from Australia with many years’ experience of judging boer goats at high level Australian shows. We would like to thank Peter for his time, comments and advice not just during judging but also time spent with all the exhibitors afterwards.

The show was well attended with 53 entries from 5 breeders and a good selection of animals was presented. Congratulations to the Supreme Champions of both the Standard Boers and the Red Boers. Best Boer Goat in Show and recipient of the Francois Maritz Challenge Trophy was the Standard Senior buck.

A big thank you to our Stewarts and all the helpers in the ring.

    2023 Wanaka A&P Show

The 2023 Wanaka A&P Show was held in fine autumnal weather on the 10th and 11th of March. Boer goat entries were down from the 2021 show with 29 entries from 3 South Island breeders. Goats shown were mainly kids and two tooths but thankfully the late entry provided a better age balance with older does and particularly a mature buck that proved a real attraction to the public.

The boer goat exhibit initiated contact with an overseas buyer, which in due course resulted in an export order for a number of goats from various breeders. This highlights the importance of maintaining a strong Boer goat profile at our regional A&P shows.

Our thanks to Owen Booth who was the judge and to Geoff Moore who ably assisted as steward in the ring.

2022 South Island Championships at the NZ Agricultural Show, Christchurch

While numbers were down, it also appeared that the winter had been hard on the goats.

It was good though to have our breed back in the ring as the previous two shows were cancelled due to Covid19 restrictions.

Congratulations to the Standard Boer Goat Supreme Champion and the Red Boer Goat Supreme Champion and to all who won ribbons and participated. This was the first show where we had a separate Supreme Champion for both colours which meant one of those was chosen as Best of Breed. This was chosen to be the Traditional coloured doe.

A big 'thank you' to our stewards in the ring for all their assistance.
